Beyond Selling: The Person

I remember sitting on a cliff on the northern side of Kodiak Island, Alaska. I watched the work boats pass by a few miles offshore and wondered, what was next, where would my life take me. I had just finished my Bachelor’s degree and was out exploring the world.

That summer I lived out of a tent that had been reinforced with plastic tarps to keep the, never ending, rain out. My view was nothing but trees, ferns and of course the North Sea. Each day I would fish for food and work the docks for a little cash. Traveling solo through this wild place was the start of a process that has become a part of my life.

I returned to Greeley, Colorado after two and a half months of living in the wilderness to find that I missed the adventure of Alaska. It wasn’t long after returning that my girlfriend (now wife) and I packed all of our belongings and crossed to the west coast. We moved to the city of San Francisco. Wow what an adventure that was.

It was here that we were engaged and planned our wedding. We lived in the Marina District and I worked at Fisherman’s Warf, while Melanie, my fiancé was a flight attendant for United Airlines. The wedding plans were done and I had a break from Graduate school. However, still wondering where my journey in life would take me. I decided on a solo trip into through Mexico via motorcycle.

After 30 days on the road I had been almost shot, arrested, accidentally crossed a river at 60 miles per hour and was nearly struck by a rattle snake in a bathroom at Todos Santos (you can only imagine what that would have looked like). My motorcycle had taken a beating and I was in worse shape. I called Melanie from La Paz and she was on a plane down within 2 hours.

Upon returning I remember the feeling of clarity and direction. One month later we moved back to Greeley. Had our wedding at the Beaver Creek Chapel bought our first home and I was accepted in the Professional Masters Program at the University of Colorado at Denver. Four years later I finished my Master’s Degree in Architecture, we had our first son (the biggest adventure of my life) and again we looked for the place where we belonged. Breckenridge or Bust.

“There is a little ski town that looks like northern Montana but the sun shines most of the winter! The people are friendly and the summers are made of magic.” I can’t remember where I heard this quote but it is so true. It is here that we have lived for the last 5 years and I have found adventure almost everyday. We have found “Home”. Why Marty Frank
